Helfrich’s Firefish, Nemateleotris helfrichi, is a dazzling fish with an animated personality. It makes an excellent addition to the reef or to the fish-only aquarium. Because of its small size, it makes a great feature item for a mini-reef. A fish of Indo-Pacific, Australian, and Hawaiian origins, this animated, relatively hardy, colorful character grows to a maximum length around 2.5 inches. Groups of Firefish Gobies in close quarters will tend to become territorial and can show aggression amongst themselves. But given plenty of room, individuals and pairs usually do fine. Helfrich’s Firefish is a great aquarium addition as it displays no aggression toward other fish, corals, or invertebrates. Care should be taken to ensure that other species do not pick on the Firefish. In the reef tank, it will appreciate the hiding places afforded by Live Rock and corals. Firefish are jumpers and require a covered aquarium. Firefish will accept a variety of foods including Brine Shrimp and bloodworms.
