The Cirrhilabrus solarensis is commonly known as Clown Fairy Wrasse, Painted Fairy Wrasse or Rainbow Fairy Wrasse. The colourful and vibrant Painted Fairy Wrasse resembles, blue head fairy wrasse to a great extent. This ideal reef fish is among the very few variety which is colourful, personable and docile. The Painted Fairy Wrasse fish has a variable morphology. But whatever is their body colour, they have bright glowing red eyes. Male Painted Fairy Wrasse fish usually are observed, to have a dark red head and a purple crescent shaped patch on its throat and edges of gills. They have a plain white belly interrupted by green coloured flanks. Juvenile females appear red with a small black patch on upper caudal peduncle and a white ventrum. However, female adult Painted Fairy Wrasse fish come in red head and the presence of blue ventrum adds to it beauty. The Painted Fairy Wrasse fish is known to come in its best vibrant colour at the time of spawning.
