Most Colt Corals will do well with moderate water movement in their aquarium. This will help to dispel the mucous coating these corals produce to clean themselves. Colt Corals may also secrete this coating when disturbed, as a protective mechanism. They should not be placed close to aggressive neighbors, as most tend to become disturbed quite easily. The polyps retract into the leathery base, and secrete large amounts of mucous. When allowed to remain on the coral, this coating can make the coral susceptible to certain infections. During the stress of shipping, a mucous coating is usually produced, and it is advisable to rinse your Colt Coral in salt water before placing it in your aquarium. Colt Corals seem to prefer moderate lighting. Colt Corals are considered to be quite hardy, and might be a good choice for beginners or for those wishing to try to propagate a coral. The Colt Coral has a branching, flowing shape which often resembles a tree. Some will grow into thinner, feathery structures, while others will remain bush-like in appearance. The polyps are located at the ends of the branches. Colt Corals are not normally brightly colored. Most are grayish, brown, or tan. Some specimens have a slight pinkish hue.
